Dr. Ruth's Encyclopedia of Sex
Windows Version
Creative Multimedia Corporation
Thank you for purchasing Dr. Ruth's Encyclopedia of Sex. Listed below are
some hints for using the program, as well as some performance and trouble-
shooting tips.
INSTALLATION
To install Dr. Ruth's Encyclopedia of Sex, select FILE, then RUN from the
File Manager Main Menu. You will be prompted to enter a command. Enter
'X:\SETUP' where 'X' is the letter of your CD-ROM drive. Follow the on-
screen instructions.
HELPFUL HINTS
Dr. Ruth's Encyclopedia of Sex is designed for use with a Display mode of
Super VGA 640 x 480, 256 colors. For optimal results, you may want to try a
32,000 colors driver. However, if you experience problems you will want to
use the 256 color driver. If you would like to use a 800x600 or 1024x768
resolution, be sure you do not use a driver labelled "large fonts".
The display driver is changed in Windows Setup, located in the Main group in
the Program Manager. Setup will list your current Display mode. To change
your settings, pick Options from the menu bar, then pick Change System
Settings from the Options menu. Click on the down arrow button to the right
of the current Display setting. A list of Display options will be shown.
Scroll through the options to pick the one you need. For example:
"Super VGA 800x600x256 (or 32,000) colors Small fonts"
or
"Super VGA 1024x768x256 (or 32,000) colors Small fonts"
It is possible that you will need your Windows disks, or the disks from the
manufacturer of your video card, to load a new Display driver. If this is
the case, you will be prompted for the appropriate disk.
SCREEN SAVERS
Disable any screen savers before using Dr. Ruth's Encyclopedia of Sex.
Screen savers may interfere with the display of graphics and cursors.
WINDOWS DRIVERS
Be sure you are using the latest Windows drivers for your graphics and sound
cards. Set your video driver to 640x480x256 (or 32,000) colors for best
performance.
VIRTUAL MEMORY
Check that your Windows system includes a virtual memory swap file (a
permanent file provides the best performance) of the size recommended by the
Windows Setup procedure. Also check that 32-bit Disk Access is turned on,
if your system permits it.
GENERAL PROTECTION FAULTS
If you are receiving a general protection fault, or if the program returns
to Windows Program Manager for no reason, there is probably a conflict
between Dr. Ruth's Encyclopedia of Sex and some other program loaded into
memory. To solve the problem, try the following steps:
(1) Close any other Windows programs that you are running, then start Ruth.
To check whether you have other applications open, press <CTRL>+<ESC> to
view the Windows Task List. If any items other Program Manager are listed,
select the item, then click on "End Task".
(2) Disable any unneeded programs which are loaded into memory from your
Config.SYS or Autoexec.BAT by typing "REM" at the beginning of the
appropriate line.
(3) Edit the SYSTEM.INI file in the Windows directory, under the heading
[386Enh], to include the line: "EMMExclude=A000-EFFF".
(4) Install updated versions of your Windows drivers, particularly the Video
driver, if available.
(5) Always quit and restart Windows after a Windows application crashes to
avoid additional problems.
PERFORMANCE
Dr. Ruth's Encyclopedia of Sex uses QuickTime for Windows. To improve
performance you might try modifying the QTW.INI file in your Windows
directory. Make the modifications suggested in QTW.INI. If Dr. Ruth's
Encyclopedia of Sex locks up due to the changes, you should switch to the
original setting. Some video cards may not work with the
'Optimize=hardware' setting.
If the program runs extremely slowly, check the EMM386 statement in your
Config.SYS file to see if your RAM is being allocated to expanded memory.
If so, try changing the line so that it reads: 'DEVICE=C:\DOS\EMM386.EXE
NOEMS'. Save your original file so that you can restore your system to its
original configuration should you decide to.
Use the DOS 'mem' command to verify that you have at 500K of conventional
memory. If you do not, consult your DOS manual for ways to increase
conventional memory.
Close all other open Windows applications. This provides the maximum amount
of memory.
